American Express fees

For a little shy of a year now, I've had an American Express Platinum Card.  The card offers significant benefits for those of us who travel often:  upgrades at mos hotels to club level floors, access to airport frequent flyer clubs, credits of baggage or airline ticket change fees, free enrollment in the "Global Enry" program, and 20% of your miles back when you use miles to purchase a ticket.  I've taken advantage of several of these benefits.  In particular, I used miles to fly to Aspen this spring for some amazing skiing, and being a rather spontaneous girl that I am, I've been quite grateful for the credit back on ticket change fees.  It seems like I very rarely actually fly on the flights I book!  Now Frontier Airlines offers their "Classic Plus" fare which is fully refundable and changeable, though, so that has helped me shuttle back and forth between Denver and New York a great deal.

Since my time living in New York will soon be coming to an end, it has occurred to me that I probably won't take advantage of many of these benefits for much longer.  I have looked into "downgrading" to the American Express Rewards Plus Gold Card - I studied the blog at http://boardingarea.com/ and other sites comparing the Rewards Plus Gold and the Platinum Cards.

Well, guess what, folks.  AmEx has a bunch of amazing promotions going on right now, including "code 6664" which will earn you 10,000 points after 15 transactions on the RPGC.  I figured that since I am not really using the Platinum Card benefits right now and I could get extra points with the current promotion, I might as well downgrade.  To my surprise and delight, the representative with whom I spoke this afternoon offered me 50,000 points as an incentive to keep my Platinum card.  I agreed.  So I guess I'll flash the Platinum for a little while longer.

I think airlines should give more free flights to passengers. They have so many empty seats sometimes and it's a great way to give a reward loyal customers, especially when passengers are disgruntled.
